GFCI and AFCI Outlet Installation

Many older homes have outlets that are not grounded. Outlets should be grounded by a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI), or an arc—fault circuit—interrupter (AFCI). GFCI outlets are typically found in your kitchen or bathroom, while AFCI outlets are mostly found in living areas, particularly bedrooms.

Many towns and cities in Vermont and New Hampshire require that you have a certified electrician install GFCI and AFCI outlets to prevent electrical shock and fires. If you have questions, are designed to prevent fire caused by heat. The circuit breaker concept is the same as in a GFCI outlet, just triggered differently. AFCI outlets are now required by law to be installed in bedrooms in many areas.
