How a Solar Hot Water Heater Works
A solar water heater is a simple device. First, a solar collector is installed on your roof. This collector is designed to absorb heat energy from the sun each day. Inside the solar collector are a series of tubes that carry a refrigerant. This refrigerant absorbs heat from the sun’s rays, as amplified by the collector plate – much like a bottle of water left in your car in the sun all day.
The refrigerant is then taken to a tank water heater where it is run through a heat exchanger, and the heat is transferred to the water in the tank. This method is effective for a number of reasons. Not only does the tank water heater make it possible to have a gas or electric backup source if the solar collector does not provide enough heat, but it also ensures you have a store of hot water at all times. There are direct solar water heating systems as well that use even less energy, but they must be protected against freezing in the winter, which is why there’s a need for refrigerant.
Solar Water Heater Installation and Maintenance
Overall, solar water heating can save quite a bit of money on an annual basis, and the cost of installation is relatively affordable. Most people report savings equal to or greater than the cost of installation within 5–10 years. Keep in mind too that solar water heaters can be used continuously for many years with minimal maintenance, and the only component that needs to be replaced is the collection tank. For direct solar water heaters, the cost is even lower.
