Why Does My Heater Keep Shutting Down?

Monday, December 18th, 2017

chilly-couple-on-couchDecember is somehow already nearly halfway over. We’ve got a lot of the heating season left to go, though, and this being Vermont means that the cold weather is going to be pretty severe for the foreseeable future. If you hope to make it through the heating season in true comfort—or anything even resembling it—then you really need your heater to be firing on all cylinders. The fact that your heater is generating heat does not necessarily mean that it is doing so in the proper manner.

One question that we get from concerned homeowners now and again is why their heaters seem to be running in short bursts. The system starts up, but stays on only briefly before shutting back down again. While this may seem at first to be something of an odd quirk, the fact is that any problems with your heater have the potential to seriously disrupt your comfort. This particular problem is called short cycling, and it can definitely spell trouble for your heater in Ludlow, VT.

How Prompt Heating Repair in Southern Vermont Protects Your Comfort and Your System

Monday, December 2nd, 2013

If you start to experience issues with your heater—a rumbling boiler, a gas furnace with a flickering pilot light, a general loss in heating power—your first instinct might be just to ignore it. Maybe it’s nothing and it will go away soon. However, this rarely occurs. When your heater shows signs of a malfunction, you need to have prompt repairs performed on it. Call a professional HVAC contractor (try to find one with 24-hour emergency service) and summon their assistance. Leaving small repairs until later usually means big trouble sooner—both for your comfort and for your heating system.

For the necessary heating repair in Southern Vermont, look to HB Energy Solutions. We have over two decades of experience. And yes, we offer 24/7 emergency service.

Why prompt heating repair is so important

The reason that getting timely repairs done on your heating system is crucial is that malfunctions tend to increase and cause a chain reaction of other malfunctions. This will lead to your heating system requiring a serious and expensive repair to keep it operating. As your heater continues to decline, your comfort will suffer as the system begins to struggle to maintain the warmth you expect. Something that seems simple, like cracks in a blower motor fan belt, can quickly turn into a major problem when the belt breaks loose and begins to strike other components in the cabinet. Problems with wiring that sound minor won’t seem so when they start tripping circuit breakers and continually cutting off the power.

Eventually, unattended repair needs will lead to your heater shutting down entirely until emergency repairs restore it. You know when this will happen, right? Correct, it will happen on the coldest day of the year. This isn’t some invisible hand of fate at work; it’s because the heater will be pushed to the limits of its ability on that day, leading to those malfunctions that will finally cause it to break down.

However, you can avoid the need for emergency calls to get your heater back in operation with regular preventive maintenance and care. If you enroll your heater in a maintenance program that provides an annual check-up and tune-up so that it runs its best, you will encounter far fewer repair issues and enjoy better comfort throughout the year.

Whether you need immediate heating repairs or you want to start with regular maintenance, contact HB Energy Solutions. One call to us will have your problems taken care of. We have served Southern Vermont with heating repair and maintenance for 21 years. Join our family of satisfied clients today.

New Hampshire Heating Guide: Where Is My Boiler Leaking From?

Monday, February 25th, 2013

Boiler leaks are not always obvious. Often, they occur in places that are difficult to access or hidden by covers. Consulting your boiler technician is the first step to repairing a leaking system. For over 20 years, HB Energy Solutions has installed, repaired and serviced boilers. If you think your boiler might be leaking, call us today.

Boiler problems can be tricky for homeowners to detect. After all, sometimes the only indication a boiler leaks is a drop in system pressure. But this may occur at such a slow rate that it’s nearly undetectable. When it’s particularly slow, there can be little trace, for small amounts of leaked water evaporate on the hot piping. At times of high usage during the winter months, leaks may be more noticeable because the total system pressure is at its peak rate throughout the year.

Calling in your local New Hampshire boiler expert is the first step to ensuring the longevity of your boiler system. If there are problems with your system, it is important to repair them as soon as possible. There are a few things an expert boiler technician may do to determine where that leak in your boiler system is coming from:

  • Comprehensive system inspection. Unless the affected component or area is obvious, there is no substitute for the discriminating eyes of a professional. They’ll check your hot water piping, boiler, controls, valves, circulator pumps, piping elbows, baseboards, and radiators to look for evidence of mineral depositing, which may indicate a leak.
  • Water supply shut-off.  Temporarily shutting off the water from the boiler allows the boiler technician to monitor the resulting pressure.
  • Thermography. If all else fails, there are certain technologically-advanced measures to take, like using thermography cameras, which can detect abnormally hot points in the system. This can help pinpoint the location of hard-to-find leaks.

If your boiler is no longer working as it once did, or if you have noticed pressure loss over the past few weeks or months, your system may have a leak. HB Energy Solutions are only a call away. Contact us today for more information about boiler repair in New Hampshire.
